Punahou has shown the ability to blow out Iolani, but in a close game, the edge continues to go to the Raiders.
Pablo Warner buried the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining and finished with 22 points to lead No. 3 Iolani to a 54-51 victory over second-ranked Punahou last night in a playoff for the overall ILH championship at the Blaisdell Arena.
Taylor Mounts added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders (11-2), who had to overcome 24 points from Punahou's Kameron Steinhoff.
"It could have gone either way," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "That was quality basketball out there and we just feel fortunate to win."
Both teams had already clinched state tournament berths, but the road to a title became a whole lot easier for the Raiders, who earned the league's seeded berth and a first-round bye.
Punahou (10-3) will try to become the first unseeded team since Moanalua in 1997 to win it.
"Fortunately we're a pretty deep team," Punahou coach Dan Hale said. "I thought we played pretty well tonight. It was back and forth and they just ended up making one more play."
Trailing by one, the Buffanblu had a shot to take the lead with 10 seconds remaining. Junior Dalton Hilliard got a good look inside the key, but came up short on the attempt.
"I'll take that shot at the end," Hale said. "I'll live with (Hilliard) taking that shot."
