Hale Na'au Pono (Waianae Coast Community Mental Health Center) received $150,000 from the Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation. The grant will be used for a two-year stop-smoking program for patients with serious mental illness.

The center also was given $50,000 from the Hawaii Medical Service Association Foundation to support an alcohol and drug treatment program with native Hawaiian cultural values in Waianae.

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai hosted the 10th annual West Hawaii Cancer Symposium in September and the annual Run for Hope fundraiser. The event raised about $70,000 for the American Cancer Society to help West Hawaii patients travel to Oahu for tests and treatments not available in Kona.
