5 honored for helping Korean community
The
Korean American Foundation Hawaii paid tribute to five community leaders, including Mayor
Mufi Hannemann, for contributions to the Korean community.
The foundation also honored Dr. Kwan Jay Cho, founder and president of International Mid Pac College; Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto of the state Department of Education; Kathryn Whang Inouye, chief operating officer of the Kobayashi Group, LLC; and Chief Justice Ronald Moon.
Daniel Liu, a senior at
Le Jardin Academy from Kapolei, has won the grand prize in the
Mobi PCS Teen Video Challenge, which asked local students to create and submit their own 30-second commercials. He won a free Motorola SLVR L7c cellular phone and a year's free unlimited wireless service from Mobi PCS.
Kai Patterson, a student at Niu Valley Middle School from Hawaii Kai, was first runner-up.
Their videos will be featured on the "Brown Bags to Stardom" TV series on OC16.
Susan Soong of Honolulu won the $500
James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry at
Hawaii Pacific University. Her poem, "Andante," was picked from more than 200 entries.
Jesse M. Fourmy of Hilo received honorable mention for "Ode to a Hermit Crab." Both will be printed in HPU's literary magazine, Hawaii Pacific Review, this summer.
