Memorial honors Mighty Mo volunteers
The
Battleship Missouri Memorial honored eight volunteers for their outstanding contributions toward the ongoing preservation and maintenance of the 887-foot, 45,000-ton ship.
Ned Conklin of Honolulu received the Battleship Missouri Memorial Award as the outstanding volunteer of the year. A volunteer since 1998, Conklin is president of the Battleship Missouri Amateur Radio Club.
The Legacy Award went to Jeff, Patricia, Nathan and Brian Fetner of Columbia, S.C., for their exceptional support for the ship. Lucy Buonnano of Honolulu received the Truman Centennial Award as an outstanding volunteer 55 years or older.
The Big Guns Award was presented to Darlene McMullen of Honolulu for being a jack-of-all-trades. Dennis Murphy of Newport Beach, Calif., a retired colonel and Air National Guard fighter pilot, won the Super Supervisor Award.
The American Red Cross is honoring its lifeguard instructors Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, Derek Lee and Jason P. Nixon, who helped save a man at the Kona Community Aquatics Center last May.
