University of Hawaii art graduate students present their annual group show
This year's exhibition of art graduate student work at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, titled "Parentheses," is a particularly strong one, says Gaye Chan, art department chair.
"There's a lot of variety this year, in material, content, interest and sensibilities, which shows the uniqueness of the works."
"Parentheses" features new works by more than 20 student artists in painting, printmaking, photography, fiber, intermedia, ceramics, glass, sculpture, installation and animation. The artists will hold a gallery walk-through noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 10.
About 25 students are enrolled in the university's 2 1/2- to 3-year program, which means each will participate in this exhibit two or three times during their graduate career. It also means some artists are more experienced than others.
"As usual, the show's very uneven," Chan says candidly. "But that's not a bad thing. Graduate school is the place to experiment. So we've got the polished work and the rough, experiemental stuff."
Chan says UH's graduate program is a strong one for the way its students "cross-pollinate," meaning that while they are accepted into specific programs (ie: paint, fiber, sculpture), they all take classes together so that a sculpture student may do a painting and a painting student may do a fiber. "This reflects the contemporary practice of art. Many artists move fluidly among mediums," she says.
"Parentheses" runs through Feb. 22. The University of Hawaii Art Gallery is open 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. It will be closed on Feb. 18 for President's Day. Call 956-6888.
