Lady Rams finish Red West unbeaten

Tani Dutro knew better than to have her troops stand down.

So, even with a division title locked up, the first-year Radford coach unleashed her Lady Rams, and they responded. Ta Nitra Byrd had 18 points and 13 rebounds as No. 3 Radford overpowered Aiea 56-43 last night in the final regular-season game for both teams.

A crowd of about 600 at Aiea's gym saw Radford finish the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West season with a perfect 12-0 mark. Bui Baravilala hustled for 13 points, seven boards and three steals, and Marlena Malepeai tallied 12 points, six caroms and four assists for the Lady Rams. Chelsea-Ann Villanueva added nine points and eight rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

"After Tee came in, she dominated a little and we didn't give them anything," Baravilala said of Byrd, who does not start.

With the top two playoff spots in the West and first-round playoff byes secure, Radford and Aiea had every reason in the world to rest their starters. However, Dutro saw the game as an opportunity to keep momentum rolling.

"That's the way it should be. Both of us are going to the playoffs, so this should be physical, close, using up all our timeouts," she said. "I'm glad Aiea came out this way."

Carol Sio and Capri Holiona each scored 10 points to lead Aiea (8-4). Sio had a team-high seven rebounds, but Radford ruled the glass with a 42-21 advantage and spoiled Aiea's senior night.

The intensity of the game also left both teams with injuries. Radford's defensive stopper on the perimeter, Brittni Fuller, went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter. Holiona suffered a leg injury in the fourth.

Aiea coach Mike Yen resisted the urge to go deeper into his bench from the start.

"Radford's gonna go hard, and they're all friends," he said of both teams.

A previous injury to key post player Kaui Kuehu meant Yen had some limitations even after Holiona left the game.

At the start, Aiea's quick transition offense netted easy points for guards Jennifer Yuen and Natasha Helsham. Na Alii had a 10-4 lead after Yuen went coast to coast with a steal. However, Byrd entered the game with 4:36 left in the first quarter and the tide turned.

The 6-foot sophomore controlled the paint, anchored Radford's man-to-man defense and finished with three blocks. Aiea shot 44 percent in the first quarter, but just 10-for-32 (31 percent) after that.
