HONORS FOR McDIARMID: Clan McDiarmid was in the house when the Caledonian Society of Hawaii named Donald P. McDiarmid Jr., wearing leis, 2008 Scot of the Year at its 43rd Annual Robert Burns Supper Saturday at the Japanese Cultural Center. Joining McDiarmid, president emeritus of Hula Records, in celebrating the 249th birthday of Scotland's national poet were Alicia Van Bokhoven, left, Leilani French McDiarmid, Kelley McDiarmid, Mabby McDiarmid, Donald P. "Mac" McDiarmid IV, Alva McDiarmid and Donald P. "Flip" McDiarmid III. "Don Junior" is holding the award; "Flip" has a big plate of haggis, a traditional Scots delicacy, that he planned to take home for later.

NEW WINES AT VINO: Master sommelier Chuck Furuya, left, and winemaker Greg Brewer were co-hosts of a wine tasting Saturday at Vino. Brewer's love of his profession made for an engaging and entertaining introduction to five of his recent wines for Diatom, Brewer Clifton and the Melville Vineyards.

AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES ITS 220th: Australian Consul Gen. David Binns, left, was joined by Gov. Linda Lingle, Air Force Lt. Gen. "Fig" Leaf and Marine Lt. Gen. John Goodman as he celebrated Australia Day with a reception Friday afternoon at his East Honolulu residence. Binns told his guests that Australia Day commemorates the landing of the first European settlers in 1788 and was first observed in 1808 with merriment, drinking "and responsible driving!"

KAAPANA INTROS NEW GUITAR: Slack-key master Ledward Kaapana, second from left, was greeted by Brickwood Galuteria, left, Joe Carmona and Elena Martinez as he prepared for his "Na Mele No Na Pua" concert Saturday at the Waikiki Beach Walk Grand Lanai. Kaapana was superb singing falsetto and playing ukulele as well as playing slack key on a new solid-body guitar. Galuteria sat in with him on "Hi'ilawe" and "Boy from Laupahoehoe," and Martinez went up later for a hula.

MASUDA CELEBRATES THE "BIG TWO-ONE": Local actress Shawna Masuda got an assist from Fred Waki, left, CJ Matsushige and Kevin Chun when she celebrated her 21st birthday Saturday at the O Lounge. Masuda said that since her actual birthday was Jan. 21, she'd had five days to practice ordering drinks instead of drinking whatever friends bought her, and added that "now that I'm older I'm dressing more conservatively."
