Schofield team takes over post in Baghdad

Soldiers of the 25th Infantry Division's 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat team, led by Col. Todd B. McCaffrey, relieved the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Jan. 15 at Camp Taji north of Baghdad to begin their 15-month Iraqi deployment.

In an Army news release, McCaffrey said he plans to continue to build a more secure environment for the government of Iraq and local leaders to establish some stability in the region. In turn, the stable environment will allow for the Iraqi police and the Iraqi army to take over more of the operations that are currently supported by coalition forces.

Along with making the area stable, McCaffrey said he plans to restore more essential services to help improve the quality of life for Iraqi citizens.

State Rep. K. Mark Takai (D, Newtown-Waimalu) was promoted to major in the Hawaii Army National Guard on Jan. 13. He has been commander of the 72-member medical company of the 29th Brigade Combat Team since November 2006. Takai is the only Hawaii state legislator currently serving in the National Guard. He is joined by 67 other state legislators across the nation who currently serve in the military. Takai helped to create the National Network of Legislators in the Military and has served as the national chairman since August 2006.
