A little case of the nerves didn't bother Mikela Thoemmes, thanks in part to her court general.
Thoemmes, playing on TV for the first time, had 14 points and 11 rebounds as No. 10 Roosevelt outlasted eighth-ranked Farrington 49-42 last night in a key Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East battle at McKinley Student Council Gym.
Roosevelt improved to 8-3 in league play, tying the Governors for second place. Kalani leads the Red East, and the top two teams will earn a first-round bye come playoff time.
Before the game, Thoemmes got some sound advice from fourth-year starting point guard Dianna Zane.
"I talked to Dianna. She said it's just another game, so I wasn't nervous at all," Thoemmes said.
Zane was glad to help.
"I could tell she was a little nervous earlier today," she said. "But she was more focused by the time we played."
Tianna Sugui added 11 points and led a smart game plan by the Rough Riders, who had edged Farrington 41-40 on Jan. 3 when Zane scored on a last-second layup.
This time, Farrington sent defensive stopper Valerie Lesu to swarm all over Zane, who finished with five points and five assists. With Zane stationed in the corner, Sugui, Keeley Bitanga and sharpshooter Tiyana Nakasone stepped up. Nakasone finished with 11 points, including three NBA-range bombs.
"They're healthy and they're dangerous," Roosevelt coach Bob Keanini said of the Governors. "I don't wanna play them again."
The young Govs seemed a bit gun-shy at times.
"We talked about it before the game. Most of our players have never been on TV," coach Caroline Tatupu said.
They steeled their nerves and rallied from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Lusina Otineru, who finished with 11 points and eight boards, scored inside on a three-point play, and Lesu drilled a 3-pointer. After Sofia Falaumahina's three-point play in the low post, the game was tied at 33 with 6:34 left.
Roosevelt answered with an 8-0 run. Sugui hit a pull-up jumper, and Roosevelt went to a weave offense that gave Thoemmes easy buckets off feeds from Bitanga and Sugui for six points in a row. The Rough Riders led 41-33 with 3:41 remaining, and the Govs got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Roosevelt shot 8-for-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, including four free throws by Bitanga.
Farrington (14-4 overall) missed point guard Honour Stone, who got the worst of a head-banging collision with Zane late in the third quarter and sat for the next 8 minutes.
"She's the quarterback of our team and makes things happen," Tatupu said. Stone finished with 10 points and five boards.
The Govs outrebounded the Rough Riders 33-25, but Roosevelt's man-to-man defense limited Farrington to 34 percent shooting (17-for-50), including 2-for-14 from long range.
