HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL
Warriors squeeze past Crusaders
Cringe-worthy. Wince-inducing. None of the adjectives that could have described an offense-challenged game meant a whole lot to Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi in the end.
The No. 4 Warriors shook off 21 turnovers and a subpar offensive performance to defeat Saint Louis 29-28 last night at Kekuhaupio Gym by holding on with just enough free throws and a stalwart defensive performance.
Kamehameha's Brandon Dumlao came up big in the game's final moments, when he converted four straight free throws to give the Warriors (6-2) a 28-22 lead with 29 seconds left. But he missed two of his next three, keeping the door open for the No. 6 Crusaders (3-5).
Saint Louis' Cole Shidaki countered with a coast-to-coast layup, and Michael Tuiloma followed with a huge offensive rebound and three-point play to pull Saint Louis to 28-27 with 10 seconds left. Saint Louis fouled Pii Minns, who couldn't hit either of his ensuing free throws, but Dumlao was clutch again by grabbing the offensive rebound on a tipout and hitting one more foul shot. It proved to be key, as Shidaki was fouled driving to the hoop with 1 second left for a one-and-one bonus.
While the Kamehameha fans screamed, Shidaki connected on the first shot to threaten overtime. But his second attempt hit the back rim, and Minns grabbed the rebound and the horn sounded.
"It's not easy shooting on these rims. Free throws have been our Achilles' heel all year," Nakanishi said. "We gotta do a better job of putting teams away."
Kamehameha remained in contention for one of the two automatic state tournament berths awarded to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
"It's not easy shooting on these rims, let me tell you that," Nakanishi said. "When they struggled from outside, we were just going to hold the zone until they could (respond)."
