There is, according to Mark Mugiishi, no crying in basketball.
None. Nada.
When Mugiishi told this to his Iolani Raiders midway through the first half, they were already down big to upset-minded Saint Louis. The Raiders refocused, matched the visitors' physical play in the low post, and rallied from a 12-point deficit for a key 46-37 win last night.
Taylor Mounts and Pablo Warner scored 13 points apiece to lead No. 2 Iolani (6-2), which remained one step behind Punahou in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu race. With automatic state-tournament berths for the top two teams in the league, the win was huge for the Raiders.
Just as pivotal was Mugiishi's not-so-subtle reminder to his key post players, Mounts and Warner.
"Once I screamed at them to stop crying about the calls and just play the game, we were OK after that," Mugiishi said.
Micah McClinton had 11 points for sixth-ranked Saint Louis (3-4), which used a physical man-to-man defense to disrupt the Raiders early on.
Iolani junked its 1-3-1 zone just 4 minutes into the game in favor of a man-to-man defense of its own, but the Crusaders picked it apart for a while. The visitors went on a 19-6 first-half run to take command as reserve forward Jamison Miller's consecutive baskets gave Saint Louis a 23-10 lead just 3 minutes before halftime.
The Crusaders shot 11-for-16 in the first half, but eight second-quarter turnovers against Iolani's fullcourt pressure proved costly. Mounts scored four points in the final minute of the half, and Bricen McCartney drilled a 3-pointer to close out a 12-1 run by the Raiders, who pulled within 24-22 at the break.
Saint Louis hung tough for most of the third quarter, but consecutive steals for layups by Iolani freshman Trevyn Tulonghari sparked a big run. Tulonghari's first steal and layup gave his team the lead for good, 33-32.
That started a 14-1 Iolani run as Saint Louis went nearly 11 minutes without a bucket. Cole Shidaki ended the drought with a basket in the final 26 seconds.
"We just gave it away in the second quarter. We needed to be patient, but our guys got a little excited and turned the ball over," Crusaders coach Delbert Tengan said. "Second half, we dribbled around too much instead of letting the game flow like it did in the first half."
