Kalaheo trips Moanalua to stay unbeaten in East
Some things, at least for the Kalaheo Mustangs, are better left unsaid.
For coach Chico Furtado, that meant some deft maneuvers with personnel while his bigs -- D.J. Chang and Alika Ka'anapu -- played big in a key 53-45 win last night over Moanalua.
Chang scored 13 points and hit four free throws in the fourth quarter, and Ka‘anapu had eight of his 10 points in the first half for No. 3 Kalaheo. Cheynne Lishman added 11 points as the Mustangs improved to 8-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play.
Furtado got the most out of Taylor Jay, pulling him briefly early in the first and third quarters. The senior finished with eight points and five assists, but his 3-pointer from the corner with 3:09 left gave Kalaheo the lead for good, 46-44.
"I expect so much from him, me being a point guard," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said, referring to his playing days at Iolani and Chaminade. "Moanalua's strength is quickness, and he needs to be smarter. I can't put up with unforced errors."
Jay took the quick sit-downs well.
"He expects me to know what to do. I already know what I did wrong, so he knows when I come back in I'll correct my mistakes," Jay said.
Moanalua coach Greg Tacon gave kudos to the visiting team.
"All their guys were fantastic. D.J., Alika and Jay. We had the lead for 5 seconds, and Jay hits a 3," he said.
Clutch free-throw shooting was a major factor. The Mustangs sank nine of their last 10 free-throw attempts in the final 2:20 to hush an otherwise enthusiastic home crowd at Na Menehune's gym.
"We buckled down defensively, but the free throws, they've been our nemesis sometimes," Furtado said.
Moanalua was within 47-45 and had the ball with 1 minute left, but a pass scooted through the hands of Josh Kure and went out of bounds. Moments later, down four points, a pass from Shawn Richey was altered by Kalaheo reserve guard Cody vonAppen and went out of bounds off Na Menehune, and Moanalua got no closer.
Austin led Moanalua (4-3) with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting and also had a team-high five steals. Kure finished with 10 points. Moanalua finished 3-for-18 from beyond the arc and was outrebounded 31-17.
The lead changed hands three times midway through the first half before the visitors took command. Ka'anapu, who shot 5-for-7 from the field, hit consecutive mid-range jumpers to spark a 12-4 run by Kalaheo. Lishman's 3-pointer and a follow shot by Chang off a missed foul shot by Aaron Fernandez at the buzzer gave the Mustangs a 30-22 lead at intermission.
Austin's pesky defense in a full-court press sparked a Menehune comeback in the third quarter, and his steal for a layup at the buzzer tied the game at 36-all as the third quarter ended.
Marcus Monroe, a sophomore, hit a 15-footer and a pull-up trey from the top to give Moanalua a 44-43 lead with 3:38 to go. The lead lasted 29 seconds.
Jay connected on a 3-pointer and the Mustangs ran away.
Moanalua used a strong man-to-man defense to limit Lishman to only one point in the final quarter.
"Everybody's hitting their shots," the 6-foot-1 senior said. "They have to take advantage of that."
Furtado wasn't a complete hoops whisperer. He drew a technical foul in the first quarter, but his Mustangs had perhaps their most poised effort of the season.
