UH students win leadership awards
Two University of Hawaii-Manoa students received the Undergraduate Leadership Distinction Awards for exemplary service to fellow students and the campus community.
Susan C. Furmanski of Brooklyn, N.Y., who served with the Associated Students of the UH at Manoa, represented the Manoa Faculty Senate's Committee on Student Affairs and the Committee on Education Planning & Policy. She also served with the Beta Alpha Psi student organization.
Crystal 'Ilima Ka'aikala of Waianae served with Student Support Services and volunteered with Na Pua No'eau and the Kua'ana Native Hawaiian Student Development Services. She also provided workshops for the Manoa Educational Talent Search Program.
Jonathan Gillentine, a special-education teacher, was presented with the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators' Outstanding Early Childhood Practitioner Award. He earned his M.Ed. in special education and a Ph.D. in curriculum studies from the University of Hawaii's College of Education.
Paulo Maurin, graduate student in the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, was awarded a John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship in Washington, D.C. He will work for one year on national and international policy related to ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources.
