Ride benefits epilepsy foundation
The Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii is hosting its sixth annual Sharon's Ride Run Walk for Epilepsy at 7 a.m. Sunday, starting from Kapiolani Community College on Diamond Head Road.
The event is a memorial for Sharon Rosenfeld, a nurse and teacher who cared for epilepsy patients, who was killed during a bicycle ride in 1993, according to a news release.
Food, prizes and activities for keiki will be available. Disabled individuals, families and teams are encouraged to take part in the event, with prizes awarded.
Registration is at 6 a.m. At 7 a.m., 100- and 75-kilometer bike rides, and 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs into Diamond Head Crater, begin; 8 a.m., 35- and 10-kilometer rides; 8:30 a.m., 1-mile walk, open to wheelchairs, strollers and pets on a leash; and 10 a.m., keiki bike safety and obstacle course.
Entry fees are $30 to $35. Applications can be obtained in Athlete Hawaii and Hawaii Sport magazines, and at the Epilepsy Foundation office in the Iwilei Business Center, 501 Sumner St.; or register online at Active.com.

Meetings discuss mental health
A group working on recommendations to improve Hawaii's mental health services will hold community meetings beginning today through Feb. 7 to discuss progress and share information.
Participants in the Hawaii Mental Health Transformation State Incentive Grant group have been meeting the past five months. Areas being explored include early intervention, acceleration and expansion of services, and work-force and community support.
Recommendations will be reviewed at these public meetings:

Mayor's trip focuses on tourism
Mayor Mufi Hannemann left last night for a four-day trip to Washington, D.C., and New York to attend sessions on challenges city governments face on tourism and the economy.
Hannemann will join about 250 mayors in a winter meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C. On Thursday he will lead a panel, which will include U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, in a session on "Promoting Travel and Tourism."
On Friday, Hannemann will travel to New York to the Milano school, also called the New School for Management and Urban Policy, as a guest speaker in its "Urban Conversations" program. He will talk about "Strong Economies for America's Cities" with the mayors of Buffalo and Miami, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey and U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York.

3 suspects sought in man's beating
Police are investigating the kidnapping and assault of a 22-year-old Waimanalo man who was taken Sunday night from a Waimanalo street and assaulted near the Makai Pier.
The man told police he was walking along Kaaiai Street in Waimanalo when an unknown man grabbed him and threw him into the cab of a white pickup truck, possibly a Ford.
Another man drove the truck to an area on Kalanianaole Highway near Makai Pier, and a third male wearing a mask jumped out of the bushes and allegedly beat him with a hammer, police said.
The suspects are wanted on suspicion of kidnapping and second-degree assault.
Police said the victim does not know the suspects or the reason he was abducted and assaulted.

3 missing children found unharmed
Three children reported missing yesterday afternoon at the Kaena Point Tracking Station were later found unharmed.
Police said a 6-year-old and two 10-year-olds, who were with a group of adults, got lost while playing hide-and-seek.
The adults searched for some time and reported them missing between 3:30 and 4 p.m., police said.
Police and a Honolulu Fire Department helicopter responded to the call for help.
About a half-hour after the call, an adult in the party found the children, police said.

Son is accused of burglarizing dad
Police arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly broke into his father's Pearl City house and stole some items.
Police said the son allegedly unlawfully entered his father's house Jan. 14. A neighbor reported the burglary and called police.
The son fled before police arrived. Police found the son at about 3:50 p.m. Sunday and arrested him near the intersection of Auhuhu Street and Anini Place on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
