Abercrombie earns civil rights honor

The Hawaii Friends of Civil Rights has given its Lifetime Friends Award to U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie. The group also honored Doris Ching, emeritus vice president for students of the University of Hawaii; Bill Hoshijo, executive director, Hawaii Civil Rights Commission; and Scott McCaffrey, past president, Honolulu Medical Society.

Dean Alegado, chairman and associate professor of ethnic studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, was honored Jan. 13 by the Filipino community, rights advocates and UH faculty and students. Alegado, a staunch supporter of immigrant and civil rights, is moving back to the Philippines with his family. He was also assistant to the chancellor of UH-West Oahu.

The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation has appointed R. Stevens Gilley as executive director.

Gilley, who has more than 50 years of experience in the real estate and hotel management industries, will help decide how best to utilize the funds received from the sale of Kukui Gardens. The foundation recently established an office in the American Savings Bank Tower in downtown Honolulu.
