Talks let fans bone up on operas before the singing starts
It can help to confront the sound and fury of the opera with a little preparation under your belt. Knowing not just the story, but also some background on the setting, the composer and the history can enhance the experience.
Hawaii Opera Theatre opens its 2008 season on Feb. 1 with "Don Carlo."
To get you ready, one-hour lectures will be presented at the Honolulu Academy of Arts on all three opera offerings. Cost is $3, free for opera theater members.
Free lectures are presented on the Sundays before opening night at Borders Ward Centre, and a brief presentation is held on the Ward Avenue Lanai of Blaisdell Concert Hall 30 minutes and 60 minutes before each performance.
Opera season lectures:
"Don Carlo" 10 a.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. Friday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts; 1 p.m. Sunday at Borders Ward.
"The Barber of Seville": 10 a.m. Feb. 7 and 4 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts; 1 p.m. Feb. 10 at Borders Ward. The opera opens Feb. 15.
"Romeo and Juliet": 10 a.m. Feb. 21 and 4 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts; 1 p.m. Feb. 24 at Borders Ward. The opera opens Feb. 29.
