A wild comeback finish capped by a spectacular play seemed appropriate for a meeting of the only undefeated teams in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East.
Taylor Jay hit two clutch free throws to tie things up at 48 with 26.3 seconds left, a huge call gave Kalaheo the ball back, and Cheynne Lishman fed Bruce Andrews for the game-winning layup with just over 2 seconds left to give the No. 5 Mustangs an improbable 50-48 win at home over No. 8 Kahuku.
Kalaheo players mobbed each other on the court while the Red Raiders walked off stunned.
Lishman led the Mustangs (7-0) with 19 points, four rebounds and three assists, and none was bigger than the last to Andrews.
It resulted in the first points of the game for the senior, usually relied upon for his energy and defense.
"My defender jumped off to help on Cheynne, and I happened to slip behind," Andrews said. "Lucky Cheynne found me, and I thanked him for the game-winner. I'm so excited."
That play wouldn't have been possible without a controversial call from the officials, who deliberated for a moment after a wild, contested Kahuku shot sailed out of bounds following Jay's free throws. After quickly conferring, they ruled that Kalaheo had not touched the ball and the Mustangs had 15 seconds to go for the game-winner. The Kahuku fans, making up almost half of the crowd, booed lustily.
Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado wanted the ball in Lishman's hands for the final shot, but after Jay passed to him just across midcourt, Kahuku double-teamed Lishman at the top of the key. The extra defender was Andrews' man, and Lishman fired a one-hander to the cutting guard before the Red Raider defense could help.
"At first I was looking to score, but they had two guys on me -- one on my back and one right in front of me," said Lishman, who hit all three of his 3-pointers in the first quarter. "I knew one guy was going to be open. I kept my head up, Bruce flashed, and I knew I had to give it to him."
After a Jay floater cut Kahuku's lead to a basket, the visitors were forced to call their last timeout with 44 seconds left to avoid a turnover. It proved to be huge, as Kahuku couldn't stop the clock following Andrews' game-winner.
To make things worse, the Red Raiders' Jray Galeai put up a tough running shot immediately coming out of the timeout, and Kalaheo recovered the ball. Galeai fouled out guarding Jay as he brought the ball up on the ensuing play, and Jay calmly sank both shots despite the head-splitting noise in the gym.
Kahuku coach Nathan James had no comment after the game, pointing to his players as the ones who should speak instead.
"I was just telling the boys that we gotta play together," Kahuku's Jack Damuni said. "We just fell short, made a couple of mistakes and next time we play them we'll try to learn from it."
