Lishman, Kaanapu push Mustangs past Knights
Kalaheo is beginning to show a balance on offense that it has lacked in previous years.
Senior Cheynne Lishman scored a game-high 18 points and Alika Kaanapu added 12 on 6-for-7 shooting as the host Mustangs demolished Castle 66-36 to remain undefeated in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East basketball.
After Castle's Isaiah Tilton buried the first of his four 3-pointers to open the game, Kalaheo scored the next 14 points and never looked back in winning its fifth straight game.
"The combination of great defense and patience on offense was the difference tonight," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "That was as close to a full game as we have played all year."
The Mustangs have been notorious for jumping out to big leads this season but have struggled coming out after halftime. Lishman made sure it wouldn't happen again, burying three 3-pointers in a 60-second stretch early in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.
Kalaheo also got solid contributions from starters Taylor Jay and Richard Preza-Haynes, who combined for 12 points, seven assists and five steals. Forward Matt Gasperine came off the bench to chip in six points and eight rebounds.
"The best teams we have had here are the ones that had balance," Furtado said. "If you look back, our state championship teams weren't the one-superstar teams."
One of Furtado's concerns coming into the season was finding scoring outside of Lishman, who is their only returning starter from a year ago. The 6-foot-4 Kaanapu has started to emerge recently, and made his presence felt under the glass last night. He made all four of his shots in the first half and his only miss came on his lone dunk attempt.
"I was trying to (dunk), but I got caught from behind," Kaanapu said. "I know I have to step up this year, and the main thing is trying to help this team be balanced."
The Mustangs outscored the Knights 34-10 in the first half and led by as many as 32 as 11 different Mustangs scored.
"In the preseason we tended to rush at times," Lishman said. "We stayed patient and it opened up a lot of things for us."
