With the assistance of instructor Carol Nagano at left, 9-year-old Masahiro Kia, middle, worked on a Japanese braid-making technique called "kumihimo" on a special loom as his friend Lynn Shigeyasu, 13, watched at right yesterday during the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii's annual New Year's Ohana Festival in Moiliili. The festival included mochi pounding, crafts, entertainment, cultural and martial arts demonstrations, games and make-and-take activities for kids.
