Tasting event stars Rogue Ales Beer
The Willows rings in the new with its first beer-tasting event of the year, a Rogue Ales Beer Dinner, at 6 p.m. Friday.
The dinner will be based on traditional Japanese New Year's dishes, paired with beers from Oregon-based Rogue Ales. Jack Joyce, founder and CEO of Rogue Ales, will introduce each beer.
Chef Jay Matsukawa's menu: Ozoni with Braised Kurobuta Pork (with Juniper Berry Ale), Duo of Yellowtail (Half-E-Weizen), Asian-Influenced Oysters Rockefeller (Brutal Bitter), "Teriyaki" Steak & Lobster (Dead Guy Ale) and Kabocha Pumpkin & Vanilla Panna Cotta (Rogue Chocolate Stout).

Sample tastes of Asia at brunch
E&O Trading Co. in Ward Centre hosts a Marketplace Sunday Brunch, a buffet of foods from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Sunday.
The quarterly brunches are a partnership with Pacific Gateway Center, a nonprofit group that helps immigrants and low-income residents launch food-service businesses on Oahu.

Alan Wong's Restaurant showcases chef Wade Ueoka in a Next Generations Dinner on Wednesday.
The menu, with wine pairings: Housemade Crispy Roast Pork (Cavallotto Langhe Bianco Pinot Nero 2006), Bubu Arare-Crusted Hamachi (Kunstler Hochheimer Stielweg Riesling Spatlese 1999), Veal Duo (Samsara Melville Vineyard Syrah 2005) and dessert of Chocolate Tower (Justin Vineyards "Obtuse" 2002).

2 wine experts to host events
Vino in Restaurant Row hosts two prominent wine minds in special events this month:
Terry Thiese, importer of German wines and artisan champagnes, hosts a tasting, 5:45 p.m. Jan. 22. Three champagnes and three German wines will be sampled. Cost is $45.
Winemaker Greg Brewer hosts two events on Jan. 26.
At 5:30 p.m. tasting will feature five wines that Brewer makes for Melville Vineyards, Diatom and Brewer Clifton. Cost is $45.
A wine-pairing dinner at 7:30 p.m. will feature chef Keith Endo's three-course menu: Seared Sea Scallop with Saffron Risotto (with 2006 Diatom Chardonnay Clos Pepe Vineyard), Contemporary Veal Milanese (2005 Brewer Clifton Pino Noir Rio Visa Vineyard), Maui Onion-Braised Prime Short Rib (2004 Melville Syrah "Donna's") and Fresh Fruit Bread Pudding. Cost is $75.
