Thankfully, her coach won't allow that to happen. Zane's speed and strength sparked Roosevelt in a key 46-36 win over Moanalua last night at the Rough Riders' gym.
Roosevelt improved to 5-2 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East. Along with a win over Kahuku earlier in the week, the Rough Riders secured wins over teams they had lost to early in the season.
Zane, who recently won a bench-press contest by lifting 135 pounds, scored 10 points and dished out five assists. "She makes big plays, gets to the basket, draws fouls. Nobody can take the ball from her," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said.
Roosevelt has turned up the tempo lately, preferring to push the ball upcourt before teams can set up zone defenses. But even in halfcourt execution, Zane and her teammates made it a point to get the ball down low to Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole, who had team highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
"She has a huge repertoire of moves, but she's reluctant to use them," Keanini said of the left-handed post.
Britni Ronolo led Moanalua (4-3) with 17 points and 10 boards. A.J. Verdidas added 10 points, but starting guard Qwineysha Wheeler sat out due to a head contusion.
"We didn't show up until the end. Their posts really came to play. They've improved greatly," Moanalua coach Kristie Morikawa said, noting the play of Kamakawiwo'ole and Mikela Thoemmes, who scored eight points.
Moanalua was within 15-11 midway through the second quarter when the home team went on a 10-0 run to close out the first half. Tiana Sugui scored on a pair of breakaway layups, including one on a steal and feed from Tiyana Nakasone, and Zane added a fast-break bucket on a feed from Sugui.
Ciena Kapea's layup at the buzzer gave Roosevelt a commanding 25-11 lead at the half.
Kamakawiwo'ole scored on consecutive low-post baskets to help Roosevelt take its biggest lead, 35-18, in the third quarter. Full-court pressure by Na Menehune helped cut the lead to 43-34 with 1:31 left, but they got no closer.
Michelle Hardy, who normally starts, played only in the second half after struggling with an illness this week. Moanalua missed the service of Wheeler, who suffered her injury against Kahuku.
"She really hurt us last time," Keanini said. She can get to the basket and release pressure off Britni."
