Area players make an impact during college bowl season

LSU's 38-24 victory over Ohio State in Monday's BCS national championship game closed a wild three-week, 32-game bowl season.

Players with local ties made their marks in numerous games, including:

» USC linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '05) forced a fumble by Illinois wide receiver Jacob Willis just prior to reaching the end zone and finished with three tackles and a sack in the Trojans' 49-17 rout of the Illini in the Rose Bowl.

» Colorado linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) had 10 tackles in a 30-24 loss to Alabama in the Independence Bowl. True freshman Kai Maiava (Baldwin '07) started on the offensive line.

» Tennessee senior J.T. Mapu (Kahuku '02) started at defensive tackle in the Volunteers' 21-17 victory over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl.

» Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04) went 7-for-14 for 122 passing yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 52 yards and another score in a 35-32 loss to Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl.

» Oregon State junior safety Al Afalava (Kahuku '05) had three solo tackles in Oregon State's 21-14 victory over Maryland in the Emerald Bowl.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

» Menlo College junior Kelci Fushikoshi (Lahainaluna '05) scored a team-high 21 points and connected on three 3-pointers in a 59-53 loss to William Jessup University on Tuesday. Senior Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04) finished with nine rebounds and six points.

» Washington University junior Shanna-Lei Dacanay (Punahou '05) had four points, five assists and two steals in a 40-point win over Webster University.

» Western Washington junior guard India Soo (Kamehameha '05) started and had 12 points, two rebounds and two assists in an 86-69 loss to Central Washington.

» Whitworth true freshman Courtney Gaddis (Kalani '07) had five points and two rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench and didn't miss a shot in a nine-point victory over Willamette University.

Fellow freshman Johanna Sai (Kamehameha '07) converted a free throw in 2 minutes for the Pirates. Willamette head coach Bruce Henderson is a '79 Roosevelt graduate.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

» Washington State senior Derrick Low (Iolani '04) scored 11 points in 36 minutes as Washington State defeated cross-state rival Washington for the sixth consecutive time. Its 13-0 record heading into last night's game against USC is the best start for the Cougars in 72 years.

» Colorado School of Mines junior Kyle Pape (Iolani '05) was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the week for Dec. 31 after averaging 21.8 points in four games. Pape scored 20 points in two games in Hawaii and followed it up with games of 23 and 24 points in wins over Minnesota-Duluth and St. Gregory's.

» Lewis & Clark senior Gene Rivera (Maui '04) had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in an 80-75 overtime victory over Pacific on Jan. 2. Sophomore point guard Tyler Tsukazaki (Maryknoll '06) did not play for the Pioneers.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

» Cal State Northridge senior Isaac Kneubuhl (Kamehameha '03) had 11 kills and hit .280 to lead the Matadors to a four-game victory over Southern California in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener. Trojans freshman Tri Bourne (Academy of the Pacific '07) had one kill, but committed three errors.

» Stanford sophomore Kawika Shoji (Iolani '06) had 51 assists and freshman Spencer McLachlin (Punahou '07) had seven kills, eight digs and three aces in a four-game loss to Alberta (Canada) in the championship of the UCSB/Elephant Bar Championship. Freshman libero Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha '07) also played for the Cardinal.
