Big names added to MasterCard
KAUPULEHU-KONA » Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, Lee Trevino and Lanny Wadkins have accepted sponsor exemptions to play in the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship next week.
The addition of the foursome brings the winners-only field to 42.
The three-day event, which begins Jan. 18, at Hualalai Golf Course on the Big Island, is the first of 29 official Champions Tour events.
HPU to honor 1993 NAIA champs
Hawaii Pacific University will honor the 1993 NAIA national champion men's basketball team at halftime of their game against UH-Hilo on Friday.
Tony Sellitto, who coached the team to the title, will attend along with 1993 team members Casey Hines, James Williams, Mike McDaniel and Michael Johnson.
Assistant coaches Darrell Matsui and Francis Fletcher also will attend the ceremony.
The Sea Warriors went 30-4 during the 1993 campaign, topping it off with an 88-83 win over Oklahoma Baptist in the NAIA championship game.
The title was Hawaii Pacific's first national championship in school history and remains the only collegiate basketball title won by a Hawaii team.
The ceremony, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the championship, will take place at halftime of the game.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Blaisdell Center.
The game and the halftime celebration will be simulcast live on KUMU 1500-AM radio and KWHE-TV, channel 14.

BYUH falls in poll
The BYUH men's basketball team fell from ninth to 23rd in the latest NCAA Division II rankings released yesterday.
The Seasiders, 7-3 overall (2-1 PacWest), went 2-1 on their opening road trip of the PacWest season, defeating Notre Dame de Namur twice and losing to defending conference champion Grand Canyon.
BYUH hosts Chaminade in Laie on Saturday.
