To counter a couple of its starters falling prey to foul trouble early, Radford turned to its battering Ram.
Chelsea-Ann Villanueva smashed her way to 18 rebounds and scored 10 points as the No. 4 Rams overpowered Pearl City 53-29 in the Chargers' gym last night.
Radford's Bui Baravilala was one of the starters hurt by fouls early, but the guard returned late to score a game-high 12 points, while Marsharen Dupont added nine and Ta Nitra Byrd contributed eight more off the bench.
Marlena Malepeai scored eight points and grabbed eight boards to help the Rams remain unbeaten in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West division.
Radford (5-0) wasn't accurate early, shooting 29 percent in the first half, but through sheer dominance on the inside -- especially by Villanueva -- the Rams had countless second and third chances to score. Radford outrebounded Pearl City 50-21 for the game, and that was exactly the effort coach Tani Dutro was looking for all season.
"It's something that we had to work on even this week," she said. "We had the whole week to practice, and we emphasized the block-out and the rebound. I told them today before the game that I need to see that, that the correction has been made, so that's how we have to rebound all the time."
Villanueva always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, and when she wasn't, she made sure whoever was didn't get the ball. She outrebounded the entire Chargers team in the first half, 14-12.
As far as the forward knew, it was her first career double-double.
"I just find my man, and they have a new rule where you can't push them back and stuff. I just push back until they call it," Villanueva said with a grin. "They were big, but they were quick too, so we had to find them. I just boxed anybody out."
Pearl City was hurting on the inside without sophomore center Markeshia Manning, who was out with the flu. Ariel Komomua came off the bench to score a team-high 10 points, including two 3-pointers.
The Chargers (1-4) couldn't muster the offense to gain their second OIA win in a row, failing to score double-digit points in any quarter. Radford forced four turnovers on the first five Pearl City possessions in the fourth quarter to go on a 16-3 run.
"We were smaller and shorter, and a bit more inexperienced, and it showed tonight," Pearl City coach Mike Morton said. "Still got to work harder to be at that level."
Pearl City took a 24-16 lead into the break when Byrd heated up with several late baskets in the second quarter.
