ILH DIVISION I BOYS
Spartans pull off upset
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu is about more than just the "big four" this season.
Maryknoll forward Richard Herring scored the game-winning layup at the buzzer as the Spartans opened league play by shocking No. 4 Saint Louis 44-42 last night at Damien.
Maryknoll (1-0) scored the game's final six points and held the Crusaders (0-1) without a field goal in the final 4 minutes to give first-year coach Steve Hathaway a big-time win in his ILH debut.
"This is the biggest win I have been a part of," Hathaway said. "This is huge for us to start our season this way."
This week's Star-Bulletin Top-10 poll is dominated by the ILH at the top. Punahou, Iolani, Kamehameha and Saint Louis were the top four teams, but the Spartans proved there's more to the league than the usual suspects.
"We've looked at this first game as a chance to put ourselves on the map," Herring said. "To take one of the big four down--I'm overwhelmed right now."
Cole Shidaki scored 12 points and Micah McClinton had 11 points and six rebounds for Saint Louis, which opened the fourth quarter with a one-point lead.
The lead changed hands four times in the opening 2 minutes. A free throw by Michael Tuiloma gave the Crusaders a 42-38 lead with 2:47 remaining, but they wouldn't score again.
A putback by Ross Lum, who finished with 10 points, cut the Crusaders lead to two. Tuiloma missed two free throws and Herring scored on a driving layup to even the score at 42 apiece.

Saint Louis had a chance to work the clock and take the last shot, but Shidaki came up short on a quick jumper. The Spartans grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 30 seconds left to set up the final play.
After running the clock down, Herring got the ball near the top of the key. He drove around a pair of screens, took it into the lane and scooped up a shot over two Crusaders that went in as the horn sounded.
"I actually thought they would come out and jump (Herring) on that play, so we tried to slip somebody underneath," Hathaway said. "They didn't and he just took it to the hole. He's a big-time player for us."
Maryknoll went 9-4 in the preseason, but had lost its last two games.
"We had two tough losses and blew a big lead against Mid-Pacific," Hathaway said. "To battle back like this against a team like Saint Louis is big for us."
