Na Alii hang on to beat Govs
After the opening 8 minutes, Aiea looked like a shoo-in to win the OIA White division championship.
Once the final buzzer sounded, Na Alii were lucky just to have won, 48-44.
Aiea led 20-4 after the first quarter thanks to 10 points from Josh Chung, but had to hold on down the stretch to pull out the victory over host Farrington last night in a battle of unbeatens in league play.
Chung finished with a team-leading 12 points for Na Alii (2-0), who won despite being outscored 22-11 by Farrington (3-1) in the final quarter.
"We've got to go back to the drawing board," Aiea coach Wyatt Tau said. "We're too good to win by only four points. That was a terrible game."
Obie Woods added a game-high 13 rebounds and Zack Hannemann had nine points and 10 boards for Aiea.
After Farrington scored the game's first basket, Aiea responded with 20 consecutive points. Chung scored 10 of the 20 points and Keenan Naeole nailed back-to-back 3-pointers off the bench as Aiea nearly ran the Governors right out of their own gym.
"We played good defense and were executing on offense," Chung said. "After that we thought we had the victory already and played not too hard on defense."
It was a struggle for Aiea from then on as Farrington slowly came back from an 18-point deficit. Na Alii led by double digits for most of the second half, but committed 27 turnovers, including five in the final 2 minutes as Farrington closed the game on a 12-2 run.
"We had one good quarter," Tau said. "The rest were not the greatest."
Farrington's Christian Hernandez came on strong with seven of his team-high 12 points in the final minute. Hernandez also had four steals and senior Bryson Tatupu-Leopoldo chipped in nine points and six rebounds for the Governors, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
"We knew they wanted to beat us in their home gym," Chung said. "To us, it felt like a championship game."
