Trailing by one with 8.1 seconds left, the play call for Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini was an easy one.
"Get Dianna (Zane) the ball and let her do what she wants with it," he said.
The 5-foot-6 senior guard dribbled the length of the court and scored a layup as time expired to give the visiting Rough Riders a 41-40 victory over No. 8 Farrington last night in an OIA Red East showdown.
Zane finished with a game-high 18 points, and left the Governors in the dust as she slithered her way through the entire defense to score the game-winner. The thought of passing the ball in those last 8 seconds never crossed her mind.
"I was just focused on going straight to the hole," Zane said. "I don't even remember what Coach said (during the timeout)."
The Governors, previously undefeated in league play, dropped to 3-1, while the Rough Riders improved to 3-2. Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu viewed the game as a true test to see how well her young team would respond against the more experienced Rough Riders, and came away somewhat pleased.
"I'm happy, but not satisfied," Tatupu said. "We just didn't make some easy buckets and didn't capitalize enough on (Roosevelt's) turnovers, but we played hard."
Farrington scored two baskets in the final 1:10 to tie the game at 39. After Zane missed a shot in the key, Farrington rebounded the ball and pushed it down court. Valerie Lesu, who tied the game with 30 seconds left, missed a hook shot, but Lusina Otineru grabbed the rebound and was fouled on her second putback attempt.
She missed the first free throw, but nailed the second to put Farrington up 40-39 with 8 seconds remaining, forcing the Rough Riders to call timeout.
"We knew she was going to get the ball and tried to force it out of her hands," Tatupu said of Zane. "We didn't get any help on defense and she basically weaved through everyone."
It was a fitting end to a game in which neither team led by more than five points.
The teams played to a 22-22 halftime tie despite Farrington going 1-for-7 from the free-throw line. The taller Governors stayed in the game thanks to a 19-9 rebounding advantage. Post players Sofia Folaumahina and Otineru combined for 10 boards in the first half, but were also 1-for-8 from the field.
"We wanted to take advantage of our height and try to pound the ball inside," Tatupu said. "We just didn't make the shots we should have."
Lesu and freshman Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo led a balanced Governors scoring attack with nine points each. Folaumahina and Otineru finished with 10 rebounds each for Farrington.
Tiana Sugui chipped in six points, six rebounds and three steals for Roosevelt, which won its third straight.
