The Sheraton Waikiki, along with members of the Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaii, hosted a mochi-pounding yesterday at the hotel. Virginia Cardenas, a hotel housekeeper, swung a mean "kine," or hammer, to turn the mochi rice into a sticky confection.

After steaming for an hour, six pounds of mochi rice was loaded into an "usu," or mortar, by Motoyuki Gonan. A total of 36 pounds was pounded.
