Kalaheo stops Kaimuki
Cheynne Lishman and his teammates were prepared to face life in a box, or so they thought.
Though their coach was far from happy, the Kalaheo Mustangs did enough to escape from Kaimuki with a 53-46 win last night in the regular-season opener for both teams.
Lishman led No. 5-ranked Kalaheo with 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting despite a box-and-one defense that swarmed around him all night. Point guard Taylor Jay added 14 points, including three clutch 3-pointers, and forward Alika Ka'anapu made five big foul shots in the final quarter for the Mustangs (10-5 overall).
David Taulung led Kaimuki (5-10 overall) with 19 points. Chauncey Nicola added 11 points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 14-for-25 from the foul line (56 percent) in their own gym. Kalaheo lost an 11-point lead, but recovered with an 8-0 run to finish the game.
"We put some stuff in to help (against the box-and-one). We're supposed to have some double picks, some staggered screens, but it never happened. Not once," coach Chico Furtado said.
Lishman, who missed all three of his 3-point tries, made do by driving to the basket.
"On the bus ride here, we heard about how the games are important now, that they count now. I think we got nervous, but in the end, we came through and hit free throws," he said.
Kaimuki had 11 turnovers against Kalaheo's halfcourt man-to-man defense in the first half, but only three in the second half. After tying the game at 40 and 42 on free throws by Taulung, Kaimuki took its first lead on a low-post shot by sophomore Desmond Tautofi. The Bulldogs led 44-43 with 2:16 remaining.
Lishman answered with a tough, twisting drive to the basket for a bucket and a 45-44 Kalaheo lead with 1:42 left.
Nicola then drove across the lane for a bucket and a 46-45 Kaimuki lead with 1:26 to go, but missed an ensuing free-throw attempt. After that, the Mustangs went on a 7-0 run to close out the game.
Jay, a senior, drained his final 3-pointer from the left wing to give Kalaheo a 48-46 lead with 1:07 to go. Tautofi then missed a pair of foul shots, and Lishman hit one of his two tries to give Kalaheo a 49-46 lead with 42 seconds left.
Lishman and Ka'anapu combined to make all four of the foul shots in the final 19 seconds to secure the victory for Kalaheo.
"Lishman's savvy. He's gonna have to get his shots off, and if he takes them from 23, 24 feet, we have to get those rebounds," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said, concerned about his young team's mental approach.
"They've never been in this situation. They weren't prepared mentally. They think they can just turn it on and off," he said.
