New Year’s resolutions for the decade
Will you be setting New Year's resolutions this year? What if you thought instead about setting goals for the upcoming YEAR -- and thought about setting goals for the upcoming DECADE?
We so often OVER estimate what we can do in one year's time, yet we UNDER estimate the goals we can accomplish in 10 years time. That's where the difference is made between those who accomplish big goals and those who give up.
Andrew Carnegie said, "The average person puts only 25 percent of his energy and ability into his work. The world takes off its hat to those who put in more than 50 percent of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few and far between souls who devote 100 percent."
So many people at this time of year think about setting their goals, setting New Year's resolutions, yet don't do anything about them. I challenge you to THINK LONG TERM. And, take one step at a time.
When you're setting goals this year, and reflecting on the past year, don't get down on yourself for the goals you did not accomplish. Instead, think of merely shifting your DEADLINE for reaching them. And keep the following poem in front of you all year long.
Although the author is unknown, this poem is one of my favorites and has inspired me to get through tough times.
I trust it will do the same for you, too, in 2008 AND 2018!
DO NOT QUIT!
"When things go wrong
As they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit ...
Rest if you must -- but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns,
As every one of us often learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When she might have won if she'd stuck it out.
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with just one more blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man.
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things go wrong
That you must not quit."
Happy New Year! Happy 2008 and Happy 2018
