List of 7 isle wonders still in the works
Question: What ever happened to the contest to pick the "Seven Wonders of Hawaii"?
Answer: The Honolulu Star-Bulletin sent out a call in August for nominations of sites to its Seven Wonders of Hawaii, a localized version of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Publication of the top suggestions has been pushed back because of the busy holiday season.
A panel of local experts is evaluating and narrowing down the nominations and will release the top suggestions next month.
The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World were compiled in the B.C. years as a guide for tourists at the time. Since then, nearly all the wonders have collapsed, and only the Pyramids of Giza can still be seen by human eyes.
Earlier this year, a Swiss nonprofit organization launched a search for the New Seven Wonders of the World, based on international telephone and online voting. Its results were released last summer.
The Star-Bulletin decided a list of the wonderful things in Hawaii would be educational and highlight what makes the islands special.
The public will have a chance next month to vote from the leading suggestions for the Top 7. The winners will be announced in February.
Those who participate are eligible for $50 gift certificates. Five winners will be selected at random through a drawing early next year.
