Visiting Beavers bounce Rainbow Wahine in final
Oregon State's speed and athleticism proved too much for the Rainbow Wahine down the stretch.
Ashley Allen and Brittney Davis combined for 26 points in the second half as Oregon State held off Hawaii 70-57 in the final game of the Island Imaging Paradise Classic last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 301 saw the Beavers (6-4) erase a 1-point halftime deficit by jumping out on a 13-4 run to start the second half. Allen hit consecutive 3-pointers to get things started and the Rainbow Wahine (4-5) never led again.
Hawaii was outrebounded 29-23 and gave up 11 second-chance points.
"It's frustrating because we go over the same things in practice every day," Hawaii coach Jim Bolla said. "This is a team that averages 32 rebounds a game and we're taller than (Oregon State). That's not coaching. That's desire."
Allen finished with a game-high 20 points and Davis chipped in 15.
Center Iwona Zagrobelna came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points for the Rainbow Wahine. Starter Tanya Smith struggled for the second game in a row on offense and finished with six points.
"At some point we have to get production out of both of them at the same time," Bolla said.
Neither team led by more than two points in the final 11 minutes of the first half as the lead switched hands 10 times. A layup by Saundra Cariaga with a second remaining put the Rainbow Wahine up 26-25 at the break.
For the second straight game, Hawaii assisted on every made field goal in the first half, but gave up five offensive rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine will hit the road for the first time this season when they participate in the Women of Troy Classic in Los Angeles beginning Thursday.
