Health and Wellness scholarships given
Health and Wellness scholarships have been awarded by Hawaii Health Guide to these 2007 recipients:
Joy Blais, Kauai/Big Island -- the Traditional Chinese Medical College of Hawaii, with a special interest in chronic pain;
Iris Nagamine, Oahu -- University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, specializing in geriatrics;
Erin Matsuda, Oahu -- University of Hawaii at Manoa, Master of Science, pediatric nurse practitioner.
Dr. Danelo Canete, Hawaii Medical Center president and chief executive officer, recently received the Philippines Medical Association of Hawaii's Distinguished Physician Leadership Award.
Canete is the first hospital CEO of Filipino descent in the United States. A cardiologist, Canete was among physicians who formed the Hawaii Physician Group to buy two hospitals from the St. Francis Healthcare System with the Cardiovascular Hospitals of America.
TriWest Healthcare Alliance is contributing $5,000 to
Toys for Tots in Honolulu, sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserve, and $1,500 to the Kaneohe Bay branch as part of a $100,000 national sponsorship.
The mission of the Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys from October through December and distribute them to needy children in the community.
