Angela Baraquio donates $2,000 to school
Angela Perez Baraquio Grey, former Miss America from Hawaii, presented a gift of $2,000 to
Sacred Hearts Academy and spoke on the value of character building. She also recognized the academy for being one of nine to be honored with a 2007 Schools of Character award by the National Forum on Character Education.
The funds from the Angela Perez Baraquio Education Foundation will be used to fund a forum in April with guest speaker Eileen Dachnowicz, a nationally recognized expert on character education.
Eric K. Yeaman, financial vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer of Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc., is a new trustee of Hawaii Pacific University.
He also serves on the boards of several other nonprofit organizations, including the Queen's Health Systems/Medical Center, the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies Foundation.
The
Office of Hawaiian Affairs awarded $98,810 to Chaminade University to identify and treat native Hawaiian children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The effort will focus on children on Molokai and Oahu.
According to 2001 state statistics, more than 10,000 children are diagnosed with ADHD, and one of every four is of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry.
