Expectations high for Moanalua
The Moanalua boys basketball team has not done much on the court to join the state's elite programs, but has voters impressed anyway.
Led by returning guard Stevie Austin, Na Menehune have all the right pieces in all the right places and are pegged in the No. 4 spot in the Star-Bulletin's prep basketball preseason poll.
Konawaena's girls are a surprise No. 4 selection in the girls poll as well.
East Carolina fans donate tickets
GREENVILLE, N.C. » East Carolina University football fans are buying tickets to their team's bowl game in Hawaii, but they are donating them to military personnel who expect to spend time there during the Christmas holiday.
Assistant athletic director for ticketing and marketing Scott Wetherbee said ECU wants to be sure someone will sit in its seats for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 23 at Aloha Stadium by buying tickets and donating them to active members of the service.
"We know we're not going to take 5,000 fans to Hawaii," Wetherbee said.
Norwood new coordinator at Baylor
Former Hawaii cornerback/safety Brian Norwood has been named the defensive coordinator at Baylor, the school announced Friday.
The Radford High graduate has been at Penn State the past seven seasons as the safeties coach under Joe Paterno. Norwood, who played for UH from 1983 to '87, got his coaching start at Arizona as a graduate assistant (1990-91) and also had stints at Richmond, Navy and Texas Tech.
"I am excited about the opportunity to work with Coach (Art) Briles at a great university like Baylor and all of the possibilities of this position," Norwood was quoted on the school's Web site. "Coach Briles has a tremendous vision for the Baylor football program and I look forward to helping him and the rest of the staff build a championship program."
Alaska-Fairbanks trips winless BYUH
Sheena Brown scored 16 points to lead a balanced attack as Alaska-Fairbanks defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 73-48 in a nonconference women's basketball game Saturday night at Cannon Activities Center.
Hoku Holdcraft came off the bench to lead the Seasiders (0-4) with 10 points.
