Oahu churches offer Christmas performances
The Christmas spirit is being shared in many forms by Oahu churches. Coming up are a "Walk Through Bethlehem" in Mililani, a "Rockin' Christmas" concert in Waipahu, a miniconcert series in Laie and a carol sing-along in downtown Honolulu.
The musical celebration continues at the following places.
» Harris United Methodist Church, 20 S. Vineyard Blvd. A 2:30 p.m. concert tomorrow will offer favorite tunes in "Carols Around the World" by the Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir and Praise Team.
» Waiokeola Congregational Church, 2704 Kilauea Ave. The 5 p.m. program tomorrow will present "The Wonders of Christmas in Art and Song." Costumed church members will re-create famous Christmas paintings while musicians and singers present carols from the same era.
» Unity Church of Hawaii, 3608 Diamond Head Circle. "The Customs of Christmas" is the theme of a concert at 7 p.m. Monday by Los Angeles poet and composer Eliot Popkin.
» Hawaii Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Laie. The 6:30 p.m. concert series continues tomorrow with pianist Ron Miyashiro; Tuesday with the Brigham Young University Hawaii string orchestra; Thursday, the Laie Belles handbell choir; and next Saturday, the U.S. Marine Pacific Band brass quintet.
» Bethel Chapel Assembly of God, 94-371C Ana Lane, Waipahu. "Have a Rockin' Christmas" at 6 p.m. next Saturday, presented by the School of Rock, will feature Arkeo, Legacy, Dear Savior and Malachi musical groups. Tickets are $6 at the door.
» Mililani Community Church, 625-6205. Costumed children and youths will escort visitors for a "Walk Through Bethlehem" from 6 to 8:45 p.m. next Saturday on the campus of Mililani Waena Elementary School, 95-502 Kipapa Drive. They will portray the shepherds, angels and wise men in telling the story of Jesus' birth.
>> Kawaiaha'o Church, 957 Punchbowl St., 853-4366. The Music and Performing Arts Ministry will present its annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. next Saturday, with performances of John Rutter's "Gloria" and John McCreary's "Magnificat" as well as traditional Christmas anthems and carols, hula and ballet. It will feature Kawaiaha'o's Sanctuary Choir, Bell Ringers, Hula Halau and Montessori preschool children, Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus and Kawaiolaonapukanileo Vocal Ensemble.
» St. Andrew's Cathedral, Queen Emma Square. The annual holiday concert at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 16 will present traditional and new carols. The congregation is invited to sing along with the Cathedral Choir and organist John Renke.
» Nuuanu Congregational Church, 2651 Pali Highway. A 9 a.m. Dec. 16 Advent worship service will present "Let There Be Light -- A Christmas Celebration," by composers Bradley Knight and Jonathan Crumpton, performed by the Chancel Choir.
