Service marks Gautama's awakening
Island Buddhists will observe Bodhi Day tomorrow in a service at Jodo Mission of Hawaii, 1429 Makiki St.
The 9 a.m. service will celebrate the day that the Buddha attained enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago. According to tradition, the Indian Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who founded the Buddhist philosophy, achieved the state of perfect clarity while meditating under a bo tree.
Mark Unno, associate professor of Japanese Buddhism at the University of Oregon, will speak on "Amida Time and Human Time."
The annual event is sponsored by the Hawaii Buddhist Council.
