Kauai boy with illness climbs with help

Nine-year-old Bodhi Stergion of Kilauea, Kauai, who is suffering from acute lymphocytic leukemia, was granted his wish for a climbing structure in his yard through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Participants worked together to build the structure, including Home Depot, which donated $2,500; project leaders Michael Goodnight and Eric Nagao of Creative Partition Systems; workers Tony Batilla, Ryan Paik and Tony Gali; Lee Grusman, Keoni Nakano and Shannon Masada of JD Painting; and Brano Miranda of Garden Island Shrub & Turf Care.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Aloha Chapter, recognized the following winners of its 2007 Philanthropy Day Awards:

Outstanding Philanthropist -- Violet and the late Paul Loo, major supporters of the Contemporary Museum, Chaminade University, Hawaii Pacific University and St. Clements Church; Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser -- Ozella P. Mabson, who founded the Epileptic Foundation of Maui in 1996; Outstanding Corporation -- Kraft Foods Hawaii, which has partnered with the Hawaii Foodbank and retailers to provide food to needy families, and sponsors other fundraising events for various charities; Outstanding Small Business -- Olomana Marketing LCC has donated more than 3,500 hours of expertise to help community nonprofit organizations.
