The annual Honolulu City Lights celebration, sponsored by the City and County of Honolulu, kicked off yesterday with a parade down King Street and a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Honolulu Hale. Shawntell Tan and Carmelynne Tan rode aboard the City and County Facility Maintenance float.

Bernice Char Loui, 100, laughed with University of Hawaii President David McClain yesterday during a dedication ceremony of the Norman W.H. Loui Conference Center at Honolulu Community College. Bernice Char Loui is the mother of Norman W.H. Loui, who left $3 million to the community college after his death on April 21, 2006.

A surfer dropped into a large wave yesterday at Banzai Pipeline. A National Weather Service issued a high surf warning for Oahu's north and west shores yesterday, with surf up to 25 feet along north shores. City lifeguards made 18 rescues, 10 of them at Waimea Bay. The weather service issued a high surf advisory for today, as waves were expected to drop to 10 to 15 feet.
