Chandler takes command
Gen. Carrol "Howie" Chandler, former Air Force deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements in the Pentagon, assumed command of Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base on Friday. He replaced Gen. Paul Hester, who retired after 37 years of service.
Other changes at Hickam announced last week include the assignment of:
» Maj. Gen. Dana T. Atkins, director of operations at the U.S. Pacific Command, to special assistant to the commander of Pacific Air Forces.
» Maj. Gen. Gilmary M. Hostage III, director of requirements and integration at U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., to vice commander of Pacific Air Forces.

Florence Ching, a project manager at Pearl Harbor's Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific, has been named as the 2008 NAVFAC engineer of the year. Ching was singled out for her organizational and fiscal management skills that resulted in on-time completion of 97 design projects valued at $67 million in California, Nevada, Washington, Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Guam. She was also cited for the management of more than $167 million worth of military construction projects. Two projects under her oversight, the Pacific Warfighting Center on Ford Island and the helicopter flight training facility at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, were identified as critical projects in the military construction program.

Local film historian Steven Fredrick will host a special two-part movie and tour program Wednesday and next Sunday dealing with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The first part will be a special screening Wednesday at a Hawaii Kai home of the film "Hawaii During World War II: The Movies and the Music of the 1940s." It features vintage newsreels filmed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, "Porky Pig" in a rare Looney Tunes cartoon, and musical short subjects featuring Lani McIntire and His Aloha Islanders. Cost is $10.
Next Sunday, Fredrick will guide a historic walking tour of areas and entertainment hangouts frequented by U.S. servicemen during World War II. The 2 1/2-hour walking tour through downtown Honolulu and Chinatown will include theaters, dance halls, diners, government buildings, pool halls and taverns frequented by U.S. servicemen. The tour will start at the Kamehameha statue at 2 p.m. Cost is $20.
