WAHINE BASKETBALL
Wahine off to best start in 5 years
Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Jim Bolla admits he's still unsure what he's going to get from his young squad.
But he has to like what he's seeing so far.
Tanya Smith recorded her fourth double-double in as many games with 16 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore Megan Tinnin came off the bench to add a season-high 15 as Hawaii routed Lipscomb 85-51 yesterday in the opening round of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawaii (3-1) will play Hartford, which beat UAB yesterday, in one semifinal game tonight at 5:30.
Dita Liepkalne added 14 points and Iwona Zagrobelna chipped in 10 off the bench as four players scored in double figures.
The Rainbow Wahine outrebounded the Lady Bisons 47-35 and scored 46 points in the paint to just eight for Lipscomb.
"We got a lot of those points in transition, which is what we want to do," Bolla said. "We felt we could run on them and we were able to do that."
Senior Amy Kotani made her second start at guard and had six of Hawaii's 25 assists, which came on 36 field goals.
The Lady Bisons came nowhere close to the offensive production that saw them score 123 points in a game earlier this year. Lipscomb missed its opening 13 shots and finished just 6-for-32 from the floor in the first half.
"I don't care who you're playing against, 123 points is a lot," Bolla said. "Fortunately they couldn't shoot early and we were able to capitalize on it."
Tinnin nailed three of five 3-point attempts and was one of eight players to score as Hawaii led 45-20 at halftime.
The Rainbow Wahine led by as many as 37 in the second half as the Lady Bisons finished shooting just 23 percent from the field.
Freshman Keisha Kanekoa had seven points, four rebounds and four assists and Leilani Galdones had eight points and six rebounds.
Galdones started the first two games of the season for Hawaii, but has given way to Kotani in the past two.
"Right now we're just trying to see what we can get out of different combinations on the floor," Bolla said. "Normally we've run a system with two post players, but now we only have one and we're trying to get more athleticism on the floor.
We're still trying to find our way."
Despite all the questions, the 3-1 start by Hawaii is its best in five years.
