Matias wins kickboxing tourney

Thomas Matias, a senior at Waianae High School, won the lightweight title at the Ringside Kickboxing Tournament yesterday in Kailua. Matias improved his record to 8-0. Matias' wins include tournaments and matches in Hawaii as well as the mainland. Matias is a member of the Waianae Boxing Club headed by trainer Fred Pereira.

Turnovers kill Vulcans

The Hawaii-Hilo men's basketball team lost to Regis University 65-58 at the Denver Thanksgiving Tournament yesterday.

The Vulcans (1-1) committed 23 turnovers, but grabbed 45 rebounds to the Rangers' 28. John Smith led the Vulcans with 13 points, and teammate Perry Baggett added 11.

» Hawaii Pacific fell to Sonoma State 70-58 yesterday in Chico, Calif. The Sea Warriors lead 28-19 at the end of the first half, but gave up 51 points in the second. The leading scorer for the Sea Warriors (2-1) was Jason Curtis, who had 21 points.
