The state has released $2.7 million to make state recreational areas and facilities more accessible to the public.
"State parks and recreational areas provide residents and visitors with places where they can hike, fish and explore the outdoors, or simply relax," said Gov. Linda Lingle. "These improvements will ensure that more people are able to enjoy Hawaii's beautiful natural environment."
Projects are scheduled at five sites on the Big Island, five on Kauai and two on Maui. The headquarters of the Department of Land and Natural Resources will also be renovated to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Construction is set to be complete by December 2009.
