UC Davis takes advantage of Hawaii’s 22 turnovers
Hawaii proved to be a bit too generous in its role as host of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic, and UC Davis was more than happy to take advantage last night.
The Rainbow Wahine committed 22 turnovers, which the Aggies turned into 33 points in a 73-52 UC Davis victory at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Aggies, in their first official season as a full-fledged NCAA Division I member, got double-figure scoring from four players to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic.
The Rainbow Wahine led by one at halftime, only to see UC Davis score the first 14 points of the second half to take control. After UH drew to within three with 8:48 left, the Aggies closed the game on a 22-4 run to turn the game into a rout.
"They just executed very well, and you're going to struggle against teams like that if you don't execute as hard as they do," UH coach Jim Bolla said. "They wanted it more than we wanted it the whole game.
"We went over exactly what they did with their defense at shoot-around and we just didn't attack it. When we did attack it, we were successful."
The Wahine (1-1) close their opening weekend with the tournament finale today against Northern Arizona (2-2) at 5 p.m. at the Sheriff Center. UC Davis and Washington (1-3) meet at 3 p.m.
Anna Harp led the Aggies with 14 points, while Jessica Campbell scored 13 and Haylee Donaghe and Ellen Porshneva added 12 each as UC Davis outscored the Wahine 41-19 in the second half.
UH guard Megan Tinnin came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points, hitting three of UH's seven 3-pointers. Tanya Smith posted her second double-double in as many games with 12 points and 17 rebounds for the Wahine, who opened the tournament with an 80-75 win over Washington on Friday.
"It's extremely disappointing," Smith said. "It's kind of frustrating because last night was such a good win I just wish we could have built on it instead of going the other way."
Point guard Keisha Kanekoa finished with six points in 15 minutes, her playing time limited by early foul trouble.
Washington 85, Northern Arizona 68
Guard Michelle Augustavo led three Huskies in double figures with 20 points and Washington picked up its first win of the season. Center Jess McCormack added 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
