Hawaiian civic clubs honor activists
The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, which recently gathered in Anchorage, Alaska, for its 48th annual convention, recognized inspiring elders in its Kukui Lama Ku and association awards, including
Helen "Lady" Kamana and
Rachel Kanoelani Maguire, members of the Kuini Pi'olani Hawaiian Civic Club;
Gege Kawelo, president of the Waianae Hawaiian Civic Club;
James Kimokeo, selected by the Kauai Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, for his work in the restoration of heiau and for sharing his manao at the Kauai Museum;
Arthur M. Mahi of the Kona Hawaiian Civic Club; and
Thomas Kalama, recognized by the Mainland Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs for establishing outrigger canoeing at his new residence in Newport Beach, Calif.
Other awards went to the Ko'olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club of Windward Oahu, which received the Prince Kuhio Award for the Outstanding Hawaiian Civic Club of 2007; and Alberta Low of Halawa Heights, a member of the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club, who received the Ka Po'okela 'o Kuhio Award for Outstanding Hawaiian Civic Club Member.
