Berton in top 25 at Turtle Bay
Hawaii golfer Robert Berton closed with a 69 to finish the fall season in 21st place at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational in Kahuku yesterday.
The Warriors finished in 17th place, while Tennessee beat UC Irvine by 21 strokes to win the team title. Charles Ford of Tennessee and Sean Shahi of UC Irvine tied for medalist honors.
Berton was followed by teammates Travis Toyama (58th), Ryan Perez (92nd), Cody Pewarchuk (92nd) and Kyle Walters (98th).
The Warriors concluded the fall season and will not compete again until the UH-Hilo Invitational in February.
Heinemann in second round at Waikoloa
Hawaii junior Sascha Heinemann beat Jeremiah Fuller 6-3, 4-1 in the first round of the USTA Waikoloa Futures on the Big Island yesterday.
Heinemann, a qualifier who has won three straight matches, will take on Ty Trombetta in the second round today.
Seasiders expected to win hoops title
Brigham Young-Hawaii was picked by the PacWest coaches as the favorite in men's basketball this season.
The Seasiders, who finished second to Grand Canyon last year, received six of the seven first-place votes with Grand Canyon getting the other. Chaminade is expected to finish in third place, followed by UH-Hilo, Dixie State, Notre Dame de Namur and Hawaii Pacific.
Lucas Alves of BYUH is the preseason player of the year after being the freshman of the year last year with 14.5 ppg. Chaminade's Marko Kolaric, Grand Canyon's Rudy Bogan, UH-Hilo's Vince Alvarado and Samuel Wilhoite, HPU's Rishi Kakad and Ryan Cooper of NDNU were named to the preseason all-conference first team.
» Grand Canyon is expected to repeat as the women's champion in the conference's second year of competition in women's basketball.
Grand Canyon received six of seven first-place votes from the coaches with Brigham Young-Hawaii getting the other. The Seasiders were follwed by Dixie State, Notre Dame de Namur, Hawaii Pacific, UH-Hilo and Chaminade.
Rosalyn Nelson is the preseason player of the year. The preseason first team consists of BYUH senior Latoya Wily, Chaminade's Simrin Cummins, Ashley Hardin and Rosalyn Nelson of Grand Canyon, UH-Hilo's Ashley Kualii, HPU sophomore Ashley Jenkins and Notre Dame de Namur's Jennifer Dreesen.
