Bown, Berg keep U.S. unbeaten
SENDAI, Japan » The U.S. Women's National Volleyball team, with former Hawaii All-American Heather Bown and Punahou product Lindsey Berg in the starting lineup, remained undefeated in the FIVB Women's World Cup yesterday with a win over Kenya.
Team USA swept Kenya 25-9, 25-20, 25-10 to go 4-0. The Americans are one of three undefeated teams remaining in the tournament. Bown started at middle blocker, finishing with eight kills and a block, and Berg at setter. Former Hawaii All-American Robyn Ah Mow-Santos replaced Berg at setter for Games 2 and 3.

Waves take 2 from Warriors
Senior opposite Jake Schkud sent his mother a long-distance birthday present last night, putting down 30 kills and hitting .471, in the California native's best performance in three years in a Hawaii volleyball uniform.
Still, it wasn't enough as the Warriors lost to Pepperdine in an exhibition for the second time yesterday, falling in the nightcap 31-33, 30-20, 36-34, 30-22. Junior All-American hitter Paul Carroll had 23 kills and freshman hitter Cory Riecks added 18 for the Waves at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The match was quite a contrast to Monday's feature contest, when the Warriors were outblocked 14-2 in 85 minutes. Last night, Hawaii closed the gap to 11.5 to 9 and extended the match to 2 hours and 13 minutes.
Hawaii opens the season with its 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational, hosting UCLA, Penn State and Ball State, Jan. 3-5.
