Patacchia, Irons still in hunt in Brazil

Hawaii surfers Fred Patacchia and Bruce Irons are still in the chase at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil.

Patacchia and fellow Hawaii surfer Pancho Sullivan both placed second in their first-round heats yesterday in the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour event.

But Sullivan lost in the second round to Marco Polo of Brazil. Irons, who placed third in his first-round heat, and Patacchia are awaiting their second-round heats when the event resumes today, surf permitting.

UH players advance at Waikoloa

Hawaii tennis players Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann both won in straight sets yesterday to advance to the third round of the USTA Waikoloa Futures tournament at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort.

Weber defeated Nikola Petrov 6-4, 5-3 (retired), while Heinemann beat Matthew Short 6-2, 6-4.

Weber, ranked 28th in the preseason ITA rankings, will face Hawaii-born Dennis Lajola in a qualifying match for the main singles draw.
