Makiki Christian Church ladies were busy yesterday sewing house slippers in a design they have made since World War I, sewing cloth over cardboard for soles and inserting folded newspaper into straps. The assembly line was efficient with lots of smiles and laughing.
Masae Morita, in blue vest, attached straps to slipper soles...
... as Kishiyo Kawano, left in top image, combined tops and bottoms with stitches that enclosed a cardboard sole.
Ayako Torai used a sewing machine to make the straps. The slippers are among items for sale at tomorrow's church festival from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
