Kahoano arrested for alleged DUI
James "Kimo" Kahoano Jr., host of the TV show "Hawaii Stars," was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Shortly before the arrest, Kahoano was involved in a minor traffic accident with another vehicle at Oneawa and Kihapai streets in Kailua and fled, police said. Police said Kahoano backed out of a parking lot and into the street, hitting a 23-year-old man's car before fleeing.
An all-points bulletin was put out for his arrest, and at about 9:45 p.m. he was pulled over at a 7-Eleven store on Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo.
Police booked him on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He posted bail of $500.
The 59-year-old actor and singer has been co-host of "Hawaii Stars" since its inception in 1993. The Kamehameha Schools graduate started his career as a fire-knife dancer and singer in Al Harrington's stage show.
Kahoano did not return a call for comment yesterday.
He is the third prominent Hawaii resident to be arrested for suspected DUI this month. State Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu stepped down as vice speaker after his Oct. 16 arrest, and "Lost" actor Daniel Dae Kim expressed remorse for his arrest in Honolulu on Thursday.
